PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Chris Gayle became the most capped and most prolific batsman in West Indies One-day International history, but an inexplicable batting collapse from the #MenInMaroon overshadowed the achievement for the self-proclaimed “Universe Boss”.
The veteran left-handed opener broke Brian Lara’s record for the most runs ever by a West Indies batsman in One-Day Internationals, but the hosts stumbled to a 59-run defeat under the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern Method in the second MyTeam11 One-day International, co-sponsored by Skoda and KEI.
Chasing a revised target of 270 off 46 overs following a rain break 13 overs into their run chase at the Queen’s Park Oval, West Indies were bowled out for 210 with 25 balls remaining to fall behind 1-0 in the three-match series which concludes on Wednesday at the same venue.

The first match of the series last Thursday at the Guyana National Stadium ended in a no-result, when only 13 overs were possible, due to rain.
Opener Evin Lewis, playing in front of his home crowd, top-scored for West Indies 65, compatriot Nicholas Pooran made 42, but the Caribbean side lost wickets at key stages to watch their chase come apart at the seams.
They looked well poised at 148 for three in the 28th over, but they lost their last seven wickets for 62 in quick time.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar led India’s attack with 4-31 from eight overs, new-ball partner Mohammed Shami 2-39 also from eight overs and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav nabbed 2-59 from 10 overs.
India captain Virat Kohli had earlier struck his 42nd One-Day International hundred and eighth against West Indies to become his side’s second highest scorer in ODIs, as the visitors were restricted to 279 for seven from their allocation of 50 overs, after choosing to bat.
Kohli’s polished 120, which also saw him surpass Pakistani Javed Miandad for the highest ODI aggregate against West Indies, left him only behind legend Sachin Tendulkar in India’s all-time ODI scoring charts.
Shreyas Iyer supported with 71, the pair putting on 125 for the fourth wicket to stabilise the innings.
Kohli struck 14 fours and a six off 125 balls and Iyer’s knock required only 68 balls and included five fours and one six.
Carlos Brathwaite was the most successful West Indies bowler with 3-53 from his allotted 10 overs.
