Keacy Carty came to the party for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes and in the process notched his maiden List A century as the home team blew past the Barbados Pride on Wednesday night. He made a sensational 123 not out as Leewards made 305-6 to overhaul Barbados’s 301-8 and secured their first win with just three balls to spare.

In an epic contest which produced over 600 runs for 14 wickets off 99.3 overs, Carty’s magnificent performance — which came off 125 balls and included nine fours and three sixes — earned him the CG Insurance Man-of-the-Match award. It gave the Leewards four vital points and left Barbados winless after two matches and at the bottom of the table.

The 23-year-old, who was a member of the West Indies Under-19 World Cup winning squad from 2016, showed his skills with a number of breathtaking shots to all part of the ground. The most memorable was a full-blooded pull through midwicket off Jason Holder which took him to triple figures.

He had a 98-run partnership with Nitish Kumar, who made a polished 41, to follow up his 112 in the opening match against Windward Islands Volcanoes.

Hayden Walsh Jr. played a major part in the Leewards win as he struck three towering sixes in 28 from just nine balls in the late stages, when the Leewards were faced with an asking rate of close to 13 per over. With the Leewards in trouble at 231-5 in the 45th over, the left-handed Walsh added 42 off just three overs with Carty and this brought great life back into contest.

Speaking with CWI Media, Hurricanes captain Devon Thomas said:

“We talked about getting a big partnership and one of the top order batsmen have to bat straight through. When I went into bat, I told Carty we couldn’t out at this time, we have to take the risk. He played it out well despite the struggles. Losing the first game put a bit of pressure on the team so we knew we had to do better than we did in the previous game.”

Earlier, fast bowler Quinton Boatswain bagged 4-62 off in 10 overs to limit the Bajans, after they looked like they could reach close to 350. He picked up his second four-wicket haul in two matches and this led to a middle-order collapse as Barbados slipped from 244-2 in the 42nd over to 299-8 in the final over. He was well backed up by leg-spinner Walsh, who had 3-75.Shamarh Brooks Jonathan Carty.jpg

Sharmarh Brooks and Jonathan Carter put on a partnership of 160 runs for the third wicket after openers Zachary McCaskie and Justin Greaves added pair of 82 in quick time. Carter made 58 from 91 deliveries which included four fours and a six whole Brooks scored 96 off 88 balls with eight boundaries and a six.

Next match: Jamaica Scorpions vs Trinidad & Tobago Red Force on Thursday at SVRS. First ball 9am (8am Jamaica Time).

Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.
