Jason Holder Audio | Match 4 vs England at Hampshire Bowl

June 17, 2019

SOUTHAMPTON, England – West Indies captain Jason Holder spoke to members of the media after their fourth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup against England at the Hampshire Bowl. West Indies were asked to bat first in overcast conditions and were bowled out for 212. The home side reached the target for two wickets, to win by eight wickets.

In the West Indies innings, Nicholas Pooran scored his maiden half-century – a polished 63 off 78 balls – which included three boundaries and a six. The 23-year-old left-hander maintained his good form – his earlier knocks were 34 not out in the victory over Pakistan and 40 in the close defeat to Australia.

Pooran shared a fourth-wicket stand of 89 with fellow left-hander Shimron Hetmyer, who made 39 off 48 balls with four boundaries. The pair took the score from 55-3 to 144-4 when Hetmyer became the first of two wickets for Joe Root, who later made a sparking, unbeaten century to be named Man-of-the-Match. Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, on his World Cup debut, took the two wickets to fall.

Summarised match scores: WEST INDIES 212 off 44.4 overs (Nicholas Pooran 63, Shimron Hetmyer 39, Chris Gayle 36; Mark Wood 3-18, Jofra Archer 3-30) ENGLAND 213-2 off 33.1 overs (Joe Root 100 not out, Jonny Bairstow 45, Chris Woakes 40; Shannon Gabriel 2-49)

“Every time we got something going, we lost a wicket. We lost wickets at crucial stages. I just think looking back in hindsight you have to build a few more partnerships and go deeper. I thought Pooran played extremely well and he is an example of how we needed to play on that pitch,” Holder said.

“At the halfway stage, we felt we had a really good chance even though we felt we were still a few runs short. The way we have been bowling, we have been backing ourselves to get new-ball wickets. It didn’t happen for us today. Well played to England.”

Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.

It's a great achievement for me to be recognised amongst the top players in the world. It shows me that all the hard work I've been doing over the last year is paying off and being acknowledged. This is motivation to keep working hard and enjoy our sport.

My take on women’s cricket is that it has grown, but it can grow a bit more once we continue to support it.
